Just-for-Fun Fridays: Butoh Chic!

Filed In Blog by claudia | Comments: 5 | Views: 2245

Butoh sums up techniques for movements inspired by the Ankoku-Butoh movement, involving grotesque contortions performed in white body makeup.

It first emerged in Japan after World War II as a form of artistic protest towards the West, attempting to go as far away from ballet as possible. Butoh as a dance form, really can be compared to a bunch of headless chickens withering onstage -a far cry from the graceful calamity that is ballet.

Speaking of ballet, don't you just love ballet flats? [Joyce: Claudia suffers from ADD sometimes...]

I strongly believe that all forms of art are completely transferable to fashion. Like how music is related to fashion, the dance and performing arts sector should also be seen as an entity that perpetually inspires the fashion industry. You like ballet? Pop came out the ballet flats!

At the direction we're going on the runways, I feel butoh will soon inspire the avant-garde, and will be a fitting expression of our fashion era.

Because beauty and fashion to our generation these days aren't always beautiful, nor are they always put together. We love the rugged, the imperfect, and at times, the grotesque like butoh.

And the best thing is, I feel like butoh chic would be easily transferable onto street wear fashion. Take away the white make up, don't you think these items look like they're mismatched basics from Muji or Gap?

What do you think? Do you think you'd be able to rock the butoh chic? Or do you completely disagree with my avant-garde premonition and perception? If you do, what do you think should embody our fashion era? Just for fun this Friday, knock yourselves out in the comment box. :)

Hmm you make a very good observation, I definitely can see elements of Butoh's aesthetic (or unaesthetic?) being translated into runway fashion and even street wear. The troubles and turbulence of the times we live will find its expression in the arts, and being a product of the times it probably would be a look that I could get behind or at the very least, appreciate.

I know Far, but the butoh I'm talking about is a different thing! haha

Giff, I hope it does make it into fashion, even if its just in Malaysia, considering the butoh scene is only getting larger, at least in KL.

Chick, you should go watch a performance, it's very interesting! Google RiverGrass Dance Theatre and Lee Swee Keong for more info in KL! :) Urbanscapes'll see a little bit of butoh too!
