Q+A: Dimple Lim
Philippines is slowly but surely breeding pure blood fashion zealots like Dimple Lim, an emerging designer and FIP graduate. She stands out for us not just because of her quirky signature and unique panache, but her love for the craft involved in the process of fashion design. Dimple talks to TiC about her beginnings, her Philippine Fashion Week Holiday 09 collection, and her clothing line's future.
How did you get started?
I used to be an interior designer, but fashion has always been an integral part. My mom would make clothes for me when I was a kid. For the longest time, my folks were also in the garment business, through which I've seen the process of making clothes.
What were your key considerations in designing your Holiday 2009 collection?
When I design, I always consider first what is flattering to the figure. Then I'll go over my inspirations which I take heavily from the streets (people & architecture are my two favorites). But on this particular collection, which I entitled Squared Circles, I focused more on manipulating the basic shapes. I came up with protruding necklines, origami-like collars to something as literal as clustered circle straps.
How would you describe your personal style?
My personal style varies a lot as I learn more (it is a neverending process), but it is more of yin and yang. What is ultra feminine has to be toned down with masculinity. Geometry can even out a curvaceous body and so on.
Tell us more about your clothing line, Limb.
Limb is about everyday clothing with a designer's touch at an affordable price.
What inspires you? Where do you get the concepts for your items?
As I said earlier, people drive me to create. It can be human emotion (a figurative poem perhaps), lifestyles, personalities, history, music and the list goes on. You just have to open your eyes to the world.
What achievements are you most proud of?
Fashion aside, I'm proud to be a mom. :)
What is your fashion philosophy?
Knowing your own self.
What are your future plans?
Menswear is definitely on my to-do list. And if given all the time in the world, I want to research on fabrics. I think there is so much to be discovered aside from just designing with regards to fashion.
