Clinique Contest Winner Personal Makeup Workshop
A while ago, we ran a contest with Clinique requesting you to share your Clinique foundation experience with us or explain why you needed Clinique foundation in your life. The grand prize winner would take home RM500 worth of Clinique products, a Personal Makeup Workshop with Clinique Experts as well as be featured on Tongue in Chic during the Workshop. The winner who took home all these goodies was none other than Swee San! I tailed along during the Personal Makeup Workshop to see what tips and tricks the Clinique Experts would share with her regarding the beautification regime.

An absolute necessity in our everyday lives is a good skincare regime. Susan, the Clinique skincare expert, started out the day by testing out Swee San's skintype. After determining her skintype, Susan then crafted a skincare regime that would best suit her needs.

Clinique skincare products that include the 3-Step Skincare system; Facial Soap, Clarifying Lotion, Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion, Superdefense SPF 25 Age Defense Moisturizer, Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief and Super City Block SPF40+.
Susan shared a lot of useful tips regarding skincare:
- Even though a lot of foundation might have built-in sun protection, it's always better to add a separate layer of sunscreen too. This is to prevent prematuring aging of the skin and pigmentation.
- Makeup is often accused of clogging up pores. However, the truth is, it is actually dead cells that are responsible for it. Otherwise, why would men, who usually don't wear an inch of makeup, have the same issue too? Hence, it is very important to double cleanse everyday and exfoliate occasionally.
- When using lotions or creams that come in a jar, you should use a stick or a cotton bud to take it out in parts. Using your finger will compromise the cleanliness and hygiene of the lotion or cream.
- Incorporate the 2 times-rule in your life; wash your face and moisturize twice in a day - one in the morning and one at night.

- Don't use your palm to scrub your face while washing it. The eye area is made from thinner skin so be sure to use your fingertips and minimal pressure around this sensitive area.

- When applying moisturizer, massage the lotion onto your cheeks first and then only spread the excess onto the rest of your face. This is to avoid an overly oily T-Zone.
After prepping her skin, Swee San headed over for her makeup session with David who is a Clinique colour specialist. They decided on one look for night and day.
David started out applying Clinique's Custom-Fit Foundation as base makeup on Swee San's face.

What sets Clinique's foundation apart from others is the fact that it is custom fitted for your skin type; meaning you will find the best foundation for your skin type.

This is particularly useful for people with combination or sensitive skin. All Clinique's foundations have treatment benefit properties so you will receive a lot of moisturizing benefits while it is on your face.
David shared that foundation should be applied from the headline downwards. After application, use your fingers and tap it gently on the formula to set it in your skin.

He finished off the base make up with loose powder. Loose powder holds the foundation for longer wear and protects the skin from dust.
For the day look, David opted for a natural look that complemented Sweesan's features. He applied some blusher on the apple of her cheeks and added some natural skin-toned eyeshadow that gave her eyes a little shimmer.

Brown eyeliner and a few sweeps of mascara was used to give definition to her eyes and a slather of Clinique's new Lip Smoothie completed the day look.

Swee San - who hardly wears lipgloss, had to take some time getting use to the Lip Smoothie. But she mention that the foundation was nice and she liked that it was too not too heavy on the smackers.
David's tip for day-time makeup
- Brown eyeliner is more casual for day time and complements the brown based eye colour that most Asians have.
- When applying blusher, apply the blusher from the cheek to the hairline. To find the apple of your cheeks, smile! The blusher should be applied at the cheekbones.
- In case of mistakes or smudges while applying makeup, don't use your finger to wipe it away as it will mess up your base makeup. Instead, roll a cotton bud over the area to smoothen it out.
For Sweesan's night time look, David blended darker colours for her eyes.

He used waterproof eyeliner and heavier mascara to create cat-like eyes.
David's tips for night-time makeup
- Deep colours like brown, grey and black are suitalble for all occasions and all lighting. Bronze is David's favourite because it's versatile.

- Clinique mascara has a special ingredient that adds a curl without prior use of an eyelash curler. To get the best effects, apply downward first to separate lashes and then tilt up for curl.
- Shimmer adds a dash of understated glitz to any look but not on puffy eyes.

Comparison between day and night look
The thing that David wanted to stress above all others is that makeup is about moods, not rules. Gone are the old days where girls are limited to strict rules passed down from their mothers. Now it's all about how you feel and want to look in that moment. Don't be too quick to swear off green eyeshadow because who knows when the mood might strike for some emerald shaded peepers.
Swee San was very happy with the night look suggested by David. She especially liked the eye shades and the fact that the mascara was self-curling since she often have stubborn eyelashes that don't hold curls.

Overall when I asked Swee San what were the top three things she took away from this Clinique Personal Makeup Workshop, she summed it up it with these:
1. She learned a lot about the intricacies of a proper skincare regime.
2. She discovered the correct steps behind solid base makeup - foundation, concealer and loose powder.
3. Using sunblock is very important regardless of your age!
