M-IFW09: mifa 10 Rising Stars
One of the most exciting show to watch during MIFW has got to be the 10 Rising Stars M-IFW 09. It features 10 of the hottest designers just breaking through in Malaysia. Instead of the usual showcase of collection after collection, official sponsor for M-IFW 09 - Maxis, decided to amplify the showcase by conducting a challenge where the the 10 chosen ones had to design an outfit for a doll to match the exclusive MIFW 09 mobile accessories from Maxis - which was displayed upon entering the Bukit Bintang Entrance of Pavilion.

Alex Yap from Malaysian Institute of Art (MIA). Reflecting his passion for batik. Alex’s collection includes artful infusions of hand-drawn, printed and modernized batik elements.

Green and blue were the main colours in his collection

Aisya Hanem's (from LimKokWing University of Creative Technology (LUCT)) creations incorporated free-flowing drapes and glamourous accent.

Aisya is an animal activist so don't worry, those are not real animal skin!

A graduate from LUCT, Andy Yap's collection was all about country chic and how he turned it around into classy pieces.

Gotta love those bags made out of potato sacks!

Another LUCT student, Muhammad Ferris got everyone’s attention on his collection when a pregnant Juliana Ibrahim walked the runway for his final piece out of his Wearable Art collection. Ethnic and colorful designs boasted multi-textured and embellished fabrics in varying shades.

Those colours definitely popped out!

Jonathan Liang from Raffles Int. College, is an ardent fashion enthusiast and takes fashion design as an extension of his artistic expression. His collection is very structured, conceived in black, white and pink with distinctive shoulders and lapels.

His fierce collection was given that extra edge when none other than Jaslene, winner of ANTM Cycle 8, walked for him.
The lush, windswept plains of Mongolian inspired Jee Yin or better known as Jyin. She managed to capture the imagination with her simple, minimalist pieces teamed with puffy sleeves.

Beautiful embroideries and eclectic accessories decked the outfits by this LUCT student.

It wasn’t a police raid or an army charge. Satheswaran’s collection drew on the powerful idealism from a military’s authoritative power. His impending creations were adorned with understated sophisticated details. Satheswaran is a student from LUCT as well.

Tan Yen Yen of SML Academy made quite a name for herself in designing shoes but can she put up with designing garments as well? Apparently so, her punk meets romance collection sure got my attention with structured shoulders, metallic gold exposed zippers and demure lace.

Check out the shoes that are handcrafted by Yen Yen herself!

The next young designer’s contemporary repertoire drew inspiration from ancient China. Structured yet feminine, Tengku Syahmi from Raffles Int. College also had Jaslene strut his prêt-a-porter pieces that is oh-so-fierce!

Would you dare look at those killer stare?

Last but not least, Winnie Leow of LUCT came out with an unusual, textured collection with tree bark patterns in earth tones.

Clinching the waist is one of her trademark touches and we don’t mind it because you know how it defines the svelte, ultra-feminine figures!
So who did you think should be awarded with the M-IFW 09 Most Promising Designer award? Which Design University do you think showed a better bunch of budding designers?
