M-IFW09: An Afternoon Affair
After witnessing the kaleidoscope of collections during the Curtain Unveil and watched the 10 Rising Stars flaunt their pieces, fashion devotees such as ourselves were treated to An Afternoon Affair – a sizzling showcase that features talented home-grown designers and brands.
As it was a weekday afternoon, not many could make the event but of course the show must go on, and here we are reporting to you what took place that day.
First of to hit the runway with a bang is Asian Atelier by Alin Anuar opened by Japanese supermodel, Ai Tominaga. Alin Anuar, who is best known for her modern interpretations of the Kebaya with delicate hand beading and hand-embroided details.
Her collection was inspired by the 50’s with a little bit of flirtatious touch.
The Ratu label reigns with its seductively soft and flowy ready-to-wear kaftans and contemporary yet ornately Malay dresses. There was a strong Arabian feel to her collection as models can be seen wearing hats similar to the Arabian Fez hat.
Did I mention the shoes were driving me insane?
Up-and-coming couturier, Jason Yek received a couple of ooh’s here and there with his eclectic repertoire of cocktail and evening apparel embellished with his signature touches of understated glamour. The detailing in his collection was impressive.
I also particularly loved the way he used the same material for the details of his apparels to make fascinators.
Also on the show was the vibrant, languorous batik apparel under the Grubby label by Rosli Mohd Don. Designed to appeal to the young and trendy, Rosli Mohd Don combined batik and stripes in his collection.
The next designer’s collection is also batik-inspired but do you know that his batik designs are exclusively hand-drawn? AD Rahman’s designs seamlessly incorporated traditional batik expressions with modern streamlined chic and can be worn either day or night.
Last but not least, Sarawakian designer Udin of Pua Indah who is renowned for turning conventionality of batik into distinctive and elegant designs that retain its classic practicality swept us off our feet with his long, flowy silk dresses.
Ai Tominaga who received rapturous cheers from the floor closed the show.
