Rounding Up the Noughties: One Decade of Asian Fashion
The noughties are closing in and it seems like we have seen such great developments in the fashion industry of South East Asia in these 10 years. Although it has always been an unconventional field, fashion has fought through for acceptance in this region and it will only get better. So before we countdown to the start of a new calender, let's take a look at some of the turning point in fashion - the past decade, in South East Asia!
Indie Designer Aalis (HK)
An independent fashion label called Aalis has recently been launched in Hong Kong. Started by an avid vintage collector, Alice Tam, and her boyfriend, Boysh, Aalis' first collection works with vintage inspirations such as chantilly lace, scalloped edges, and pretty florals to produce a stylishly, wearable collection. Already making its mark in Shanghai, Singapore, the UK and now in Hong Kong, we scored a few minutes with one of the budding designers behind this new label.
MISCHA: Past Meets Present
There's nothing better than making your own personal statement through fashion and since owning one-of-a-kind pieces is one of the few ways to do so, this explains my obsession with handmade and vintage. Now when I come across something that combines handmade, vintage and bursts of bright colours, I fall totally and completely in love. Drool aside, let me introduce MISCHA - a range of bags and accessories made from vintage Japanese obi fabric designed and handmade here in Hong Kong.
Random Art Workshop (HK)
Tucked away in the hustle and bustle Causeway Bay and in the very popular building Island Beverley (home to a myriad of little boutiques popular amongst Hongkongers), is a new concept store called Random Art Workshop. Their mission is to 'create an outlet for people to uncover their passions by bringing art into their daily lives'. Whether it is scrapbooking, photography, jewelry making and accessories and even makeup - you can be sure to find a variety of events and products that bring out the designer or artist in you. New Store Opening: Moustache (HK)
Moustache is a new Hong Kong based menswear brand that has just opened on Aberdeen Street, slightly off the beaten track of the achingly hip and world renowned Soho district in Hong Kong. The nondescript signage in Chinese with a moustache image is a small indication that this is a store that sets itself apart from the other generic shops that have opened lately in the area. Walking into the store, one will straight away be struck with the vintage-inspired clothing featuring breathable cottons and linens and the store's locally inspired interior design. Also a one stop shop for bespoke tailoring services for both men and women, and impeccable service, Moustache is definitely worth a detour from the main Soho shopping area.

Q+A: edit'd
It is refreshing to find something just a little different in Hong Kong other than the commercially produced clothing that seems to be everywhere. Helene Ang, both founder and the creative force behind the label edit'd, offers one-of-a-kind repurposed and upcycled vintage and reclaimed clothing - each with its own story. Her debut collection, launched earlier this year, was well received in Hong Kong and following that success, she has just launched her own website.
