For some of you who may have heard the term for the first time, batik is a traditional technique used on textiles which include the process of wax-resist dyeing. Of course, the term can also be used for traditional-ethnic patterns on textiles and fabrics. In Indonesia, the most famous batik pieces come from Yogyakarta. Sophie Buhai and Lisa Mayock barely graduated from their tenure in Parsons the New School of Design before they debuted their first collection in 2003. It’s been nothing but uphill for the two friends, now running their label in Brooklyn, N.Y, as they went on to win the Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation award in 2006 and 2007, and were nominated for the prestigious Vogue Fashion Fund/CFDA award. This further catapulted the duo to the heady heights of success, and are currently touted as the designers to watch each season.

Referencing a diverse range of influences in each of their collections,

Vena Cava

isn’t looking to be the next Gucci or Cavalli; where these two Italian brands are known for their sexually charged and overtly glamourous looks reminiscent of the 70s on the catwalk. Instead, the ladies choose to reflect their love of old Hollywood glamour, ancient Indian culture and arty, vintage prints.

Always Greener on the Other Side…

As a child, the allure of Jakarta was introduced to me via a song my parents used to karaoke along to. It was called ‘Antara Anyer dan Jakarta’, a song made famous by Malaysian pop queen Sheila Majid. To tell you the truth I had no idea what or where ‘Anyer’ was, but I have heard of Jakarta and imagined the place to be a lush land of greenery and exotic animals, inhabited by gorgeous women with crazy purple eyeshadow.

I wondered why Sheila decided to immortalize her desire for the land across the sea in song - perhaps she had a lover with the exotic Indonesian accent, or maybe she just needed a vacation like the rest of us. After necessary maturing on my part, I discovered many amazing things about Jakarta. And thankfully, their innate sense of style is being documented in a streetstyle blog called Jakarta Street Looks.
